Common Questions

What is an IUL?

Indexed Universal Life (IUL) is a flexible life insurance policy that combines a death benefit with the potential for cash value growth. It can help you build a tax-advantaged asset while protecting your loved ones.

Who is IUL right for?

IUL can be a great fit for individuals, families, and business owners who want more than traditional life insurance. It works especially well for people looking to build tax-advantaged retirement income, protect their loved ones, leave a lasting legacy, or offer employee benefits through a group IUL program. It's generally available to individuals ages 25-70, and eligibility varies based on health and carrier guidelines.

What are legacy plans?

A legacy plan uses life insurance to help protect your family's income and pass on what you've built according to your wishes. I help you create a plan that supports your loved ones for generations to come.

How does tax-advantaged planning work?

IUL policies offer built-in tax advantages. Cash value grows tax-deferred, and you may be able to access it tax-free through policy loans when the policy is properly structured. Loans reduce the death benefit and may have tax consequences if the policy lapses. I always recommend working with your CPA or tax professional for personalized tax guidance.

How much does an IUL cost?

There’s no one-size-fits-all price. Your cost depends on your age, your health, the amount of coverage you want, and how much you’d like to build in cash value. IUL premiums are also flexible within limits, so the policy can be designed around your budget and goals. The best way to know your numbers is a free, no-pressure consultation, where I’ll walk you through a personalized illustration.

Can I lose money in an IUL?

Your cash value is protected from market downturns by a floor, often 0%, so a down year doesn’t reduce it from index losses. Growth is also limited by a cap. Policy fees and loans can still affect your cash value, which is why proper design and regular reviews matter.

How is an IUL different from a 401(k)?

A 401(k) is a retirement account with annual contribution limits and taxes due on withdrawals. An IUL offers a death benefit, tax-deferred growth, and access to cash value through policy loans that can be tax-free when the policy is structured and maintained properly. Many of my clients use both together.
